The "Crack"

Nadhiir

One of the main techniques I use in my practice is High-Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) thrust to a specific joint of interest. When I am unlocking the joint with a fast low force with a highly minimal motion applied to a joint, I have locked through building a pressure (leverage) through it. It is the famous "click" or "pop" of a joint when applying HVLA.

High-Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) is a type of osteopathic adjustment that involves using a high-velocity, low-amplitude force to manipulate the joints. Some of the benefits of HVLA include:

  1. Pain relief: HVLA can help alleviate chronic pain, such as back pain, headaches, and neck pain.

  2. Improved range of motion: The HVLA adjustment can improve the range of motion of the joints, allowing for better mobility and flexibility.

  3. Reduced muscle spasms: The adjustment can help reduce muscle spasms, which can cause pain and discomfort.

  4. Improved posture: HVLA can help correct posture issues and improve alignment, reducing the risk of future injuries.

It's important to note that HVLA may not be suitable for everyone, and it's always best to consult a qualified practitioner before trying any new form of therapy.

The Science

The science behind HVLA is based on the principles of biomechanics and neurophysiology.

Biomechanically, HVLA aims to restore normal movement patterns to the spinal joints, reducing joint restrictions and improving spinal function. The low-amplitude, high-velocity thrust is used to create a cavitation or "popping" sound, which is thought to result from the release of gases within the joint.

From a neurophysiological perspective, HVLA is thought to stimulate the nervous system, reduce pain, and improve function by improving the communication between the brain and the affected area. The mechanical forces generated by the HVLA thrust are thought to activate mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors in the spinal joint, which can help to reset and improve the function of the nervous system.
